Located a mere 8 miles east of Maple Tree Inn is the newly renovated and very high tech Mineta San Jose International Airport. This cutting edge architectural feat hosts 11 million visitors annually and is the largest U.S. design-build airport project. The 2, 600,000 square foot airport was completed in 2010 and was modeled after Silicon Valley’s “high tech” reputation.

Modernization of the airport included a new Terminal B renovation as well as the expansion of Terminal A, a consolidated rental car garage, surface parking and roadway improvements. The project was designed and architected by Fentress Archtects, a prominent architectural firm founded by Curtis Fentress in 1980. Fentress Architects has been one of the top firms leading the sustainable design movement since the early 1990s.

Terminal B was specifically challenging to remodel as the build site was narrow and restricted by roadways and waterways. The new modern, tubular, design by Fentress fits perfectly into the constraints of the space in an elegant manner. Due to complex seismological standards of California, Fentress developed a design in conjunction with a roof that can move back and forth over a foot in response to an earthquake.

Not only is the newly renovated Terminal B elegant and functional, but it also features the country’s largest digital art collection representing the culture of Silicon Valley. Terminal B is also the first passenger terminal in the western United States to be certified LEED Silver.
